In addition to choosing unique thread textures and colors, decorative stitches, and fun finishing fabrics, you can personalize your needlepoint projects even further by adding your initials or full name.
I like adding my initials in the corner of a background or sneaking it in the main part of a design to sign my work. I recommend determining where you will add your initials near the start of your project so you can optimize the location.
If you are new to charting, charting your initials is a great way to dip your toes! Try it on a scrap piece of needlepoint canvas first to practice.
To chart I recommend using a paintbrush and acrylic paint (I like Golden Fluid and Apple Barrel brands) or a micron pen. If painting, for 13 mesh I recommend a size 2/0 paint brush and for 18 mesh a 5/0. Use cheap brushes! Paint brushes don’t last long when used on needlepoint canvases.
Be sure to choose a color that either matches the thread you plan to stitch or is a lighter color in a similar color family. For example, if you plan to stitch your initials in white I would avoid charting in red, as it very likely will show through your thread.
